A Study on The Effects of Single-System-Design Subgroups Art Therapy on The Improvement of Mentally Retarded Children¡¯s Social Skills

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of art therapy on the social skills of children with mental retardation. For the purpose, this researcher provided mentally retarded children with 5 sessions of baseline, and 12 sessions of art therapy, 60 minutes per one session over 4 months. In this case, the researcher utilized AB type of the Single System Design. The measurement is the Social Skills Scale which was restructured to contain 15 question items in total, with 5 for each of 3 sub-areas. The rating system was created by Gresham and Elliot(1990). The SINGWIN Program was utilized to determine changes in social skills. And the pre-and post-projective drawing tests were analytically compared in terms of social skills. The findings of the study as follows. First, it was found that art therapy had significant effects on the social skills that children with mental retardation had. Second, the projective drawing tests found that mentally retarded children changed in the social skills more positively after than before art therapy. Third, it was found that art therapy made children with mental retardation show more and more positive changes in the of social skills as art activity sessions where those children participated became in more and more progress.
